She had spent her career attempting to make contact with the most remote and alien of strangers, while in her own life she had made contact with hardly anyone at all. She had been fierce in debunking the creation myths of others, and oblivious to the lie at the core of her own. She had studied the universe all her life, but had overlooked its clearest message:
For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love.
Drumlin: Ellie, I know you must think this is all pretty unfair. Maybe that’s an understatement. What you don’t know is I agree. I wish the world was a place where fairness was the bottom line and that the kind of idealism that you showed at the hearing was rewarded, not taken advantage of. Unfortunately, we don’t live in that world.
